States with abortion bans see spike in ectopic pregnancy deaths

Maternal health is likely to be an issue once again in the next Texas legislative session. Ectopic pregnancy deaths in the U.S. almost doubled between 2020 and 2025, largely due to states that banned abortion following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. The increase is expected to be discussed in the next Texas legislative session. President Trump has ordered the Department of Health and Human Services to establish a new women's health division, tasked with researching conditions that uniquely or disproportionately affect women and improving prevention, diagnosis and treatment for them. In Texas, 310 more patients experienced substantial blood loss after an ectopic pregnancy, an increase of about 29% from 2018–19 to 2023–24. The rise in ectopic pregnancies began during the pandemic but continued to rise after Texas imposed sweeping abortion restrictions in 2022. Maternal health experts suggest that abortion bans alone cannot explain the national rise, but should be examined for documented delays in care caused by the laws.
